Is it the time to make the dreaded transition from gas powered guzzlers to alternative energy efficient cars?

The Big 3 of the American Auto Makers have abandoned our laborers for cheaper labor elsewhere; we cannot predict what gasoline prices will be from one month to the next; and our environment has been polluted so bad that we cannot leave our houses because of the unhealthy ozone levels. So why not make this effort more seriously now? Instead of bailing out the greedy auto manufacturers? Why not use the bailout money we have and could waste on the American Automakers to fund this necessary transition? What viable alternatives or ideas do you have to recommend?
